polytechnic youth enter the fray once again, continuing an already productive year (these new 45s are 4/5/6th releases in 2018 already!) with a trio of quite brilliant yet totally different 45s.
alpár aka hungarian bálint zalkai, is the co-founder of farbwechsel, the budapest based record label, and his own recordings of electronic compositions (often built upon random looping sequencers in a minimalist style) are key to the label’s release output thus far. his goal as he sees it is to “catch a random pattern, loop it and build up a piece with that randomly pulsing theme. just let to flow the voltages and sound waves and try not to disturb them or change their basic behaviours”.
the two tracks here were recorded with this approach very much in mind. the atmosphere of “mejiro” is “not unlike a bird observation. attempting to find the right spot, getting closer and closer to the bird, which almost controls you and your movements as you attempt to near it”. whereas “wakayama” is a more direct piece, and maybe the most melodic song alpár ever recorded. while “mejiro” is a woozy, cautious piece, “wakayama is like a tropical fruit or the ume, (the japanese apricot), colourful and full of flavour yet -with thanks to- the slowly humming theme in the background, an element of sourness grips you at the back of your tongue as it ends!

opener laguna is a loopy, liquid track of fluttering drums and rubbery kicks that never lets up. ortica is more gloopy and wonky, with firmer kicks and aqueous sounds dripping off the groove, while lyra is beautifully delicate and intricate, with underwater life forms drifting by as gentle xylophones sounds dance around. the masterful minimalism continues on the dark, undulating and alien vilipendio, and things round out with the paranoid voices and panning synths of mekong , an unsettling track that has you looking over your shoulder.

demuja joins the madhouse roster this march with come to me, a four track ep featuring french/australian singer ladybird and a folamour remix of the title track. after various releases on the likes of nervous records, rtct records, and his own label muja, austria’s bernhard weiss aka demuja joins madhouse with some fresh material following last year’s output on house puff and freerange. the release opens with title track come to me, a rough and ready lo-fi number featuring a soulful sample, and blissful stabs of horns and strings. following is the folamour’s lost in eden remix, twisting the original into a balearic, sun-drenched vibe, contrasting the original and bringing a more funk-infused, melodious feel to things. up next is the second original on the release take which employs classic house tropes with a nod to the 90s via catchy horns and a new jersey garage/house beat. free me feat ladybird then closes the package, taking you on a silky smooth house journey, with ladybirds dazzling vocals taking center stage.

following cottams critically acclaimed i cant carry on ep, which marked the inaugural release on fatcat records new electronic sub label fcr, the highly-rated dj/producers new 12inch drops also via fcr. locked in the groove is a groovy, boogie chugger, which powerfully ebbs and flows over nearly 11 captivating minutes, and sample heavy dub is all dark n heady eastern atmospherics, whilst dreaming of another place is a fathoms deep, epic journey into mystical and majestic dub-house. an avid participant in preston s early rave scene, paul cottam inevitably pursued djing, progressing to warm up slots for his techno heroes surgeon and regis. tentative steps into production using ableton were met with such encouragement that cottams debut releases began to appear. a set of four untitled, un-marketed and unpromoted vinyl self-releases created a huge organic stir with record collectors, attentive journalists and djs including moodyman, gerd janson and soul clap. this buzz was helped in part by speculation on his identity, but was primarily due to his simple yet effective, flavour-filled and groovesome tracks that blurred the boundaries between re-edits, reworks and originals, moving between slow-mo chug and more straight-up house, whilst encompassing elements of disco, hip hop, nu soul and afrobeat.

the 2nd of 3 eps that make up will long’s new album “long trax 2”. as much as is said of our current times being new lows, where things have changed for the worse and we’re unsure of the future, it’s worth returning to study the past to understand how steadily low we remain. “nothing’s changed”, says a younger barack obama in a sample for the opening track. “long trax 2” is the second album from will long after his 2016 “long trax” debut on comatonse recordings. the album presents as an ongoing criticism of cultural stasis, conveyed via minimal synthesizers, sampler, and rhythm machine. dancefloors are widely perceived by the masses as safe zones, but few can imagine how to apply notions of safety and equality to other aspects of society. we shouldn’t need clubs to hide from our fears and differences in the outside world. looking ahead, we should look not so optimistically upon what we have accomplished, but with urgency and empathy upon what we haven’t.

legs 11 was formed when sigmund floyd, of palace of pleasure fame, joined forces with torstein dyrnes from the now defunct playstation duo tøyen, and mysterious bedroom musician nils tveten. during a karaoke-fuelled haze in the seedy parts of oslo, they discovered a shared love of synth pop, post-punk, new wave and house music. drawing on these influences, the band has created a diverse musical universe, ranging from dark repetitive guitar driven tracks, via infectious pop gems, to deep yet melodic dancefloor-orientated grooves. in 2017 they were joined by multi-instrumentalist audun severin eftevåg, who also brought a new instrument into the band: the saxophone! the “another wave” album is hand-picked tracks from their latest works, focusing on a more dancier approach. the house and nu-dance influences of today is mixed with heavy influences from 90’s uk indie-dance acts like the shamen and the madchester scene, and hints of new wave from the 80’s.

animals onpsychedelics is a label out of cleethorpes, run by dj carl h. through a combination of name, artwork and musical output, animals on psychedelics focuses on the more tripped out, spacey side of electronic music. release 003 comes from memphis who has had these tracks hidden away on his dats files since the early 90s, jane fitz who contributed to the 1st release over at aop helped un earth and make this ep happen, you know its going to quality with janes involvment.

chreal01 is the debut project by scottish producer chaotic reality exploring a meditative side to techno. written over the course of several months spent living in new york as a resistance to the frenetic pace of a busy environment, chreal01 contains four tracks that repeat, oscillate and soundtrack a more centred existence. inspired by shinichi atobe, avalon emerson, newworldaquarium / ross154 & the 7th plain. each track in this self-released record is named after its sequence and operates on a slower tempo, focussing on melody and sound design, with aim to investigate the space between dub techno and early trance. track one opens with gentle dancing chords developing over 7 minutes, with subtle nods to echospace and black dogs otaku over a punchy kick and warm sub. reverb-licked stabs pass softly in and out the mix and ride over a homogenous chord range, highlighting points in the melody and meandering back into the ether. two has an introspective focus, rarely reaching more than two kicks per four bars. an arpeggiated lead centres the composition, slowly developing over a thick bassline. distant snaps and pops season the track and highlight the empty breathing space intentionally left in the production. on the b-side, three is characterised by heavily saturated kicks softly thumping under a bubbling melody, broken by echo-delayed stabs varying in form, filter depth and feedback timing. on the closing song four, chaoticreality develops and sculpts a stack of delayed chords creating a progressively elevating soundscape. the lead melody chords layer and discord changing thickness, shape and form throughout with pseudo kicks acting as a complimentary melody. here, cr plays with space to creating a hypnotic spacial production akin to digital justice or the orb, with the intention to take the listener to a transcendental state. chreal01 is housed in a popset sleeve & hand stickered

paper tree sneaked out into the world for a moment a few years back and then vanished. lee burridge loved the track so much that he continued to harass rebelski, sometimes standing outside his window in the flower bed, for weeks on end until he finally agreed to let lee release it on all day i dream. not content with a single track lee went back to rebelskis garden and tapped on the window repeatedly until he agreed to make some more beautiful tracks. obviously pestering producers in this manner bares fruit. the paper tree ep ranges from a beautiful solitary solo piano piece that wouldn t be amiss in a british period piece drama where someone dies unexpectedly leaving the survivors to deal with it, all the while maintaining their stiff upper lip. fly the kite made us want to go outside and do just that. so we did. it was epic. circles and squares joins paper tree as one of those dance floor moments best experienced with ones eyes closed. myriad is the sound of a young lady robots jewelry box (yes, we predict robots will be wearing jewelry in the future) that she(bot) pines to hear when she s all grown up and rusty. omoshiroi is, well, its just so damn pretty. good work rebelski. good work.

nick anthony simoncino is synonymous with the revival of italian house music over the past five years or so, and so it feels right for him to be delivering this album to vibraphone. of course, simoncino has more than enough skills (and hardware) to make something truly special, and that s apparent from the opening strains of -mystic adventures- onwards. there s a sense of urgency and mystery woven into tracks like -righteous rule-, where haunting leads wobble over sizzling drum machines, and the overall mood is redolent of 80s soundtracks mixed with the uneasy side of chicago house music. maintaining a punchy finish throughout and constantly reaching for the spooky side of machine soul, simoncino has more than delivered for the legendary italian label.

akumandra is the mexican imprint of sainte vie. the label promotes the exceptional artists riding the sub current of multicultural electronic music and, after 3 years of sharing its music for free, it s about to release on vinyl for the first time. sainte vie s music is a prime summary of what it means to hear in a post-genre universe. as trends are quickly rendered obsolete, the accumulation of culture debris is becoming more significant in relation to the producer the ability to create a nostalgic blur through a composition of artifacts and interpretations. paying homage to this, estacion inmortal (sainte vie s first ep) produces the afterglow associated with an auditory epiphany. the combination of mellow interludes, earthy chord progressions and acoustic-synthetic equilibrium have the capacity to conquer both communal space and solitude.

long time friend of the label, neue grafik, steps forth with his most fully realised offering to date. this record has been a long time coming, born out of a encounter in paris back in 2016. this meeting of minds led to a blossoming friendship between fred ( neue grafik) and bradley ( rs intl) which has taken them across 3 continents, countless dance-floors and finally crystallised onto this 12-. the record itself takes cues from the broken-beat sound of london while paying homage to the parisian house dance scene. largely sample based, but also employing much more live instrumentation than ever before, neue grafik s music is informed by movement and in turn offers so much for dancers to respond to.

lumièreslanuit (lln) is glad to introduce to you to samochai (llnoff004), 4th release of its off series by bremen-based music composers and djs massud matin & smisou. samochai ep presents two different atmospheres that lumièreslanuit and its off series are particularly fond of: deep- and dub-techno. indeed, whereas massud matin take us out of ourselves with the deep, atmospheric and mind-blowing beats of zal, smisou imm­­erses us in his musical world with the dubby, cadenced and aquatic beats of chanj. massud matin & smisou celebrate the same music since 2012. the beginning of their collaboration was marked by a couple of digital releases like smisou’s remix of massud matin’s come on (2015) and his keemun ep (2016) — in collaboration with miynn — on samani that also includes a remix by massud matin. more recently, massud matin & smisou released parand de muth on brosh records. finally, in december 2017, massud matin brought out his first vinyl ep like you (tprl03) on romanian label tupiar records.

slow glass is not only the debut release by le frère it is also a very personal diary of the last two years of his life. all four tracks are based on recordings, samples and ideas he collected while travelling the world. with the concept of slow glass in mind le frere tried to catch moments of his life without stripping them of their dynamic and evanescence. the ep starts with lots of positive energy and light but already reveals glimpses of the shadows that slowly emerge throughout the following tracks. nice is a lightly humming version of an (almost) innocent summer morning. it s a collage of field-recordings, synth-pads and manipulated guitar sounds. candid is a light and open dialog between a simple guitar theme and a playful synth-arpeggio. v1b1n creates the dense atmosphere of a rainy caribbean afternoon dominated by field recordings and everyday noises. nttt8-sets a counter point to the previous three tracks as the energy of le frere s travels cumulates in nttt8, making it a more dance-floor oriented piece carried by a dark and heavy bass-line and almost rave-sirens.

the inimitable cc:disco! has partnered with hyped underground label soothsayer to curate the first in a collaborative series of compilations entitled first light. soothsayer presents first light: volume 1 compiled by cc:disco! is due for release in february 2018 digitally and on vinyl. australias reigning champion of tasteful electronic music, cc:disco! has procured exclusive tracks from emerging and undiscovered artists across genres such as boogie, balearic, funk, disco and house with each sound piquing her interest, culminating in a finished product that would undeniably slot into a cc:disco! set. her mission statement? less chin stroking, more dancing. it captures what cc:disco! is all about: the dancefloor. the very first taste of first light comes in the form of a salty and sweet track called really want that by jace xl. premiered via resident advisor, cc:disco! explains: i remember the first time i heard jace sing in a bar, at first i thought a dj was playing then i looked up see jace singing his guts out. he blew me away! jaces voice is amazing and to me, a huge part of whats going on in australian music, so its with open arms we welcome him to first light. staub comes back on wax for a third episode. following the no name policy from the parties which started 5 years ago in it is time again for unknown artist to shine. this new ep sees the shy producer appearing on 4 tracks of pristine techno. a1 is an atmospheric trip while a2 is more brutal, on the b side it is going weirder and darker. we think unknown artist tries to craft interesting techno cuts and that he loves variety. that it is the idea behind staub since its beginnings, it does not matter whether you are a newcomer or lady gaga, what matters is the quality of the music. this is what was again aimed with this third record.

violet and bleid met last year in lisbon, at the radio quântica studios. in the very same day, they impromptu started working together on a track: a cover of underground sound of lisbon’s so get up to celebrate international womens day. together, alongside a crew of young lisbon djs and activists, they also run the queer techno party mina, one of the most vital things going on in the city’s nightlife - the picture in the artwork was taken in the backstage of one of those infamous, dark-room-equipped parties.
bleid remixed naive001’s togetherness by violet, and that dope rework made it to rroxymore’s bag (as heard at berghain) and was played on bbc radio 6, rinse fm and +++. the pair became friends, started bouncing ideas about production techniques, rap skills and the importance (or lack thereof) of the classics in dance music. making more music together happened naturally.
naive002 feels like a continuation of naive’s first release in some ways: the jungle-inspired chopped breaks, sonic synth work and oneiric pads are still there but gain a heavier, perhaps more somber tone at times, exploding into depth or ecstasy at others.

the tiefschwarz boys have just struck musical gold with their latest offering for souvenir, a fresh ep delivered by the electro trailblazer named bolz bolz (germanys andreas bolz) whos done more for underground music than you probably realize. practice paris is a 4-track ep which dives into the murky, broken beat and techno tinted territory mr. bolz has honed to perfection - with each track tried and tested from the souvenir crew to stunning result.

the second outing from yaleesa hall in this two-piece ep series on will & ink. the 13th release on the label packs a visceral punch across four fresh tracks that are perfect for dance floor deployment. first track daisy wright kicks off with minimal but impactful drum rhythms that eventually get cut up with tumbling sirens, hammering hits and blasts of dirty noise. it s hugely physical stuff, while follow up barbara adams is more stripped back and mysterious. icy hi hats tick, howling synths sound bring a sadness and the depth of stern field as sounds play out above, below and all around you is truly standout. harriet brown then sinks into a deeper electro groove with spangled bass, before a vip mix then slows things down to a dread fuelled dub wise swagger that eventually breaks out into oscillating, stuttering rave madness. it makes for one hell of a thrilling ride and kicks off a promising year for both yaleesa hall and the will & ink label.

arkansas native, lee moore moved to memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in new york, l.a and everywhere in between. as a singer and songwriter lee moore spent the 1980s collaborating in memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like volt and stax records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. lee moore unfortunately never got close to reach his goals of fame and fortune. lee s final project for the score label is a bonafide underground gospel burner. originally released in 1989 it s a perfect look into his transition from the rougher edged funk, disco & boogie of his earlier efforts and shows his smooth transition into a more celestial and blessed musical output. again this one’s a real rarity and past due have secured this high quality, legit reissue for the heads.

funky sobrietas is the slick love child by leuk en ko s jan duivenvoorden and richard van den bogaert. intended to be a poppy german italo duo for a wedding act amidst the squatting scene of the hague, the music they produced was of more value than just an one-off. from a shoebox stacked with dodgy recordings two tracks were selected that offer you the full funky sobrietas spectrum. maria is the anthem for the one you would die for, with unpretentious vocals and echoes but catchy synths nonetheless. sunny is six glasses of champagne later when the wedding is on it s flipside, with a nifty dry bassline and quirky synths. comes in opaque white vinyl and (again) beautiful riso printed artwork, pressed in limited amount (123) for all the die-hards out there.

straight out of underground paris and right onto pinkman s broken dreams arrives myn. the public systems label boss follows up a debut track on his own label with a poem about gloom, desolation and anger written in native machine language for the rotterdam imprint. the a stanza describes a mental outburst with punchy lines written in raw percussion and disconcerting 303 work. following a line break, the b stanza changes the meter from 4/4 to pummelling broken beat in a piece about power and dominance titled black rose . the violent poetry concludes with yet more deathly rhythms and spine-chilling verses in core collapse .

die londoner musikerin & nts moderatorin nabihah iqbal löst ihr bisheriges projekt throwing shade auf und macht jetzt new wave bei ninja tune salonfähig! mit der veröffentlichung ihres debütalbums macht nabihah iqbal gleich zwei große ankündigungen: als erstes lässt sie ihr throwing shade-alter ego hinter sich. dadurch, dass sie den namen annimmt, mit dem sie geboren wurde, repräsentiert sie mit stolz ihre britisch-asiatische herkunft als künstlerin, die elektronische musik produziert. und zweitens, dass sie ihr album bei ninja tune veröffentlicht. mit stärkerem fokus auf live-instrumentierung (die sie komplett selbst eingespielt hat), folgt ihr kommendes album „weighing of the heart“ einem noch kräftigeren und einnehmenderen sound, als noch ihre vorhergehenden veröffentlichungen. inspiriert von u.a. can oder bauhaus, verschmilzt sie düstere und treibende basslines mit schimmernder synthesizer-atmosphäre. aufgenommen in ihrem studio, ist das album das produkt selbst organisierter und sich entwickelnder livesessions geworden, die auf die tatsache zurückgehen, das sie in ihrer musik ihren einflüssen mehr raum gelassen hat. abgemischt wurde das album im studio 13 von stephen sedgwick, ein enger vertrauter von damon albarn, der auch das jüngste album der gorillaz mixte.

yoruba records is proud to welcome back toto chiavetta with our latest release, nagnu jubo (remixes). this follow up to the debut album, impermanence, includes remixes by osunlade as well as new and unreleased work from toto himself. kicking off proceedings is the yoruba soul mix of nagnu jubo, a deep and smooth groove rich in personality. the warm chords reel you in as the underlying rhythm engages and inspires. the yoruba soul dub retains the warmth of the original without the track’s signature chant. this is followed by a new, previously unreleased, version of minds. originally appearing on impermanence, this version is decidedly more floor focused. a 303-style bassline keeps this moving right along as percussive elements add texture and drive to this forward thinking dance tune. finally, closing out this release is hunters, a track which showcases totos dark and techy side. this expressive tune is ripe with emotion and will have discerning listeners locked in introspection while their feet do work on the floors below them.

lillygood party! is a label focused on licencing tracks that alex and stephane play for years at their parties. the aim is to re-edit and revisit those jams from soul to house , jazz to afro, boogie to techno and make us and people enjoy and smile on the dancefloor because those tunes are really really good both tracks here are classics dancefloors tunes, nothing rare, just favourite tunes that alex and stéphane play in their sets. on the a side the onwards international version is longer than the original and the arrangement quiet different for more intense dancefloor action. here they both worked on the edit to find the right balance and the right sound in order to revisit the uk classic jazz funk number, a firm favourite here lillygood! the b side is an amazing disco modern soul gospel track from elbernita twinkie clark already reissued some time ago but the cherry on the cake is that you have here a 12inch version extended and a new mastering for extra loud play this version is slightly different than the original, alex extended parts: the beginning with drum intro looped for mixing and changed the end to make it longer keeping the original flavour. please enjoy as much as we do because we love those edits, we love those tunes, we love music we are very happy to share with you these limited vinyls releases

gitanes is olde gods new ep and longest output to date. following a series of singles on the minor planets label, the barcelona duo are up to a 12inch four-tracker on amsterdams atomnation. gitanes brings echoes from spains not-long gone golden club era. its cover depicts an abandoned club from the 90s in a coastal town in the mediterranean, could be anywhere from valencia to barcelona. all four tracks are trippy yet solid-grounded, spacey voices and strings leads all flying up and magically suspended over gross rhythmical foundations. dear cz, a fetiche track, built around a moody casio cz synth stab topped up with acid videogame-like crazyness. gitanes brings entrancing vocals intertwined with more cz pad action. all around is a foggy and paranoid late-night drive, and none of these bitches, a homesick folks walk around tokyos daikanyama area. olde gods are jmii and guillamino

sudd records make the leap to vinyl with the help of detroit champ gari romalis. abstraxx (linear mix) kicks off the record in a heady fog of undulating pads, the smoke positively drifting out of the speaker cones over a simple, deep-as-you-like drum pattern. dark ryda (sunset mix) gets a little more funk in its rhythm, but the same mellow mood prevails, almost reaching dub techno levels in its atmospheric chord swells. heat (bout that life mix) takes things out of the darkness and into a lighter frame of mind, but romalis is still firmly in the deep end of the deep house pool with this final cut on the record.

versatile parisian jay ka, offers a slow dripping slice of deepness to the saft following. with the help of paula king on vocals, title track only grace is a reminiscent anthem with strong vocals supported by lush chords and smokey rhode hits. as a real single should, this package also offers 3 interpretations of the original. with remixes by briton ny*ak and atlanta situated kai alce, this saft output should grab your full attention easily. where ny*aks rework maintains a more repetitive vibe with nicely timed vocal cuts, kai alces late night interpretation recalls classic vocal-house reworks from the glory days of extended 12inch mixes. as usual for a complete single like this, an instrumental version of kai alce s rework is included.

dokta has been seen lurking around 20:20 vision with a curious take on that label s particular brand of house. that step to the left becomes more pronounced on this record, where dokta gets to call on a wealth of live instrumentation to animate his sound. on london nights he interweaves vocal, ambling keys and crooked basslines into a curious and utterly inspired cocktail of cool-headed pressure, which jason heath then simmers down to a purely instrumental refrain. burnski goes to the other extreme and beefs the track up for a firm and functional ride, while ralph lawson dubs the track out and gives it a low slung swagger.
